Here are a few tips to help you preserve the beauty of your wood flooring and carpets…
Wood floor care
Excessive exposure to water can cause wood floors to warp, so always dry the floor well after any spills.
You should use specialist cleaning products to keep your wood floor looking great. We always have a range in stock at our shop in South West London. Avoid using soap-based cleaning products on wood floors as these can create a build-up, which could cause problems with refinishing in the future.
Dirt and grit will scratch and dull the surface of your wood floor, so we recommend placing a floor mat at the entrance to your property to trap the particles.
To avoid scratches you should also try not to drag furniture across a wood floor. Lift lighter items and place felt pads under heavier items so you can slide them smoothly. It’s a good idea to place large floor protectors under heavy furniture such as tables or sofas, to spread the weight and prevent denting.
Carpet care
To extend the life of your carpet and keep it looking good you should vacuum at least twice a week, more frequently for areas with heavy traffic.
Even the best vacuum cleaner will struggle to get out deeply engrained dirt. Eventually this will weaken and break your carpet fibres. The solution is to periodically shampoo your carpet. We recommend getting this done by a professional cleaning company.
Many of the carpets we supply are naturally stain repellent or treated with stain-proofing. However it’s still important to react as quickly as possible to any spill to reduce the risk of permanent damage.
Here’s what to do.
1) The first step will depend on the type of spill you're dealing with…
Liquids
Blot with absorbent cloths or plain white kitchen roll. Avoid rubbing as this could damage the pile. If the liquid was water this is all you’ll need to do.
Soft substances
Gently scrape the substance up with a spoon.
Hard and crusty substances
Scrape the stain lightly to loosen. In the case of chewing gum, first apply ice to make it brittle.
Loose particles
Vaccuum as soon as possible to avoid the particles working their way deep into the pile.
2) If the mark is still visible, and the spill was anything other than water, apply warm water onto the area with a sponge or cloth, and blot it firmly. Repeat this several times, rinsing the sponge or cloth frequently. Try not to get the carpet too wet in the process.
3) Place five or six layers of kitchen roll over the affected area and place a heavy book on top, such as a telephone directory. Over the course of two to four hours the kitchen roll should absorb any stain from the fibres.
Avoid walking on the carpet until it's thoroughly dry.
